Tolquhon Castle

History haunts the ruined castle like a murmur of yesterday; an aura of fragile peace plays with memories that refuse to fade in the light of today. The castle stands as a shadow of its former glory, however grandeur still glistens in the old stone walls.

Tolquhon Castle, near Tarves in Aberdeenshire, is an exciting example of a Renaissance ruin. An Historic Scotland property, its towers reach to the sky like a vanquishing army, king of its land, defiant of the effects of time.

Preston’s Tower survives from around 1420, built by Sir John Forbes (his wife Marjorie Preston giving name to the tower).

However it was William Forbes who is largely responsible for the castle we see today, dramatically extending and rebuilding it in the 1580s. He adopted the contemporary fashion of a rectangular courtyard.

The imposing gatehouse depicts various sculpted characters.

The impressive hall still retains its hexagonal sandstone flags. Close your eyes, and imagine a gathering of fine clothed noblemen and their ladies.

Winding staircases fan the flames of hidden history.

The remains of former gardens form a pleasant area to walk or relax.
