Timeless Trail: City West End

Aberdeen city centre has a remarkable selection of sculptures, as featured in Aberdeen City Council’s Sculpture and Curios Trail

Here are some exceptional curios near to the West End of Union Street and Rosemount area.

The Well of Spa was frequented by Scottish portait painter George Jameson in the 1600s. Jameson gifted a vault for the spa in 1635; below is the remaining structure at the corner of Skene Street and Spa Street.

In Rosemount Square, relief figures adorn the outer walls of the Art Deco style flats. They were created by sculptor Thomas Bayliss Huxley-Jones, and represent Rain and Wind.

A grand statue of George, fifth Duke of Gordon stands over Golden Square. Designed by Thomas Campbell (1790-1858), it was the first granite statue erected in the UK.

The Langstane, on the corner of Dee Street and Langstane Place, is of unknown origin however may be a march or boundary stone or the sole survivor of an historic stone circle. Note: narrow kerb

The Archibald Simpson stone within Bon Accord Square memorialises Aberdeen’s greatest architect, famed as one of two architects of Marischal College, the second largest granite building in the world. He also designed the Music Hall and several churches.

Below is a stainless steel sculpture by Doug Cocker RSA. It can be found on top of Meridian House just off the west end of Union Street.

Below is a fine example of Aberdeen Nuart by artist Bordalo II. The artwork consists of end of life materials from the local area, and symbolises the threat of pollution to both animals and humans.
